Cross Timbers State Park

The forested flood plains surrounded by prairie terraces and oak savannah hills provide wonderful opportunities for RV vacationers to be immersed in the diverse flora and fauna at Cross Timbers State Park. Sitting on Toronto Reservoir, Cross Timbers State Park is located in the gently rolling hills of the Verdigris Valley, off Highway 105, Toronto, Kansas. The park with its amazing opportunities for water activities and recreation is the ideal choice for RV holidays.

The park features shaded campsites that are easily accessible to the lake and are equipped with full and partial RV hookups as well as primitive camps. Amenities at the park include modern bathrooms, shower facilities, basketball court, boat ramps/dock, comfort stations, information center, parking lots, playgrounds, swimming beach and area, vault toilet and dump stations. Activities to enjoy on RV vacation at Cross Timbers State Park include hiking and biking on the roughly 16-mile-long trails, wildlife and bird viewing, photography, fishing, swimming, boating, canoeing/kayaking, and hunting. Back country camping is allowed by special permit on segments of the Chautauqua Hills Trail.

As a lover of outdoor study and nature observation, you will find the park an extraordinary area for your pursuits during your RV vacation. With its access to the 2,800-acre Toronto Lake, Cross Timbers State Park accounts for 1,075 acres in the northern reaches of the physiographic region known as the Chautauqua Hills.


Transportation

Driving

Cross Timbers State Park is located off Highway 105, on Toronto Reservoir, 14 miles west of Yates Center, and so the park is an easy drive-in park for RVs, trailers and cars. Accessing the park is easy, and getting around the park is equally easy as the different campgrounds and sites are connected by local paved roads and gravel roads. There are no driving restrictions within the park.

Parking

There are numerous parking options for RVs, trailers, and cars at Cross Timber State Park, as the park has 12 parking lots distributed across its campgrounds and campsites. You’ll find five parking areas at the Blackjack campground and four parking lots at Sandstone campground. Each of East Ramp Loop, Cross Timbers campground, and Osage Plains campground have a parking area for RVs and trailers. Overnight parking facilities are available at the park.

Toronto Point in Cross Timbers State Park comprises Cross Timbers Campground, Osage Plains Campground, Sandstone Campground, Group Campground, and Outlying Areas. Outlying Areas consists of 20 primitive campsites available on first-come, first-served basis. Facilities in Toronto Point include Frost free hydrant, ADA accessible fishing pier, camp and cabin host, basketball court, campfire theater, boat ramps and dock, beach, self-pay station, dump station, shower houses, vault toilets, and gazebo.

Cross Timbers Campground

Cross Timbers Campground located in Toronto Point, Cross Timbers State Park features 24 standard pet-friendly campsites available for RVs and tents. The campsites are equipped with electric and water hookups for RVs. RV length limit at the campground is 90 feet. Amenities at the park include restrooms, basketball court, dump station, waterfront access, parking lot and access to Chautauqua Hills trailhead.

Subject to regulations and posted notices, any individual over 21 may possess, consume, or drink alcoholic liquor. Kegs and party balls are strictly prohibited. Osage Plains Campground located in Toronto Point, Cross Timbers State Park features 23 standard pet-friendly campsites available for RVs and tents. 15 campsites in the campground are equipped with full hookups for RVs, while eight campsites have electric and water hookups only. RV length limit at the campground is 86 feet. Amenities at the park include playground, toilet vaults, drinking water facilities, boat ramp access, dump station, parking lot and access to Chautauqua Hills trailhead.

Holiday Hill in Cross Timbers State Park comprises Blackjack Campground and Outlying Areas. Outlying Areas consists of 20 primitive campsites available on first-come first-served basis. Facilities available at Holiday Hill include camp host, boat ramps, vault toilet, and shower houses.

Blackjack Campground

Blackjack campground located in Holiday Hill in Cross Timbers State Park features 15 pet-friendly campsites available for RVs and tents, and one primitive campsite available for tents. The campground has one standard campsite with full RV hookups, seven standard campsites with electric RV hookups, and seven standard campsites with electric and water hookups. RV length limit at the Blackjack campground is 75 feet. Amenities at the campground include restrooms and showers, as well as access to the Blackjack trailhead. The campground is accessible by paved and gravel roads.

In-Season
Hiking/Biking

Hikers, bikers, and backpackers feel at home at Cross Timbers State Park thanks to the approximately 16 miles of trails at the park. As a result, RV vacationers visit the park equipped with their hiking and biking gear. The trails at the park include the half-mile-long Oak Ridge Trail, one-mile long Blackjack Trail, 1.25-mile-long Overlook Trail, 11-mile-long Chautauqua Trail, and the one mile long Ancient Trees Trail with interpretive signage. All the trails are open during daylight hours only, and no camping or fires are allowed on the trails. All but the Ancient Trees Trail are open to other non-motorized uses by RV campers including jogging and mountain biking.

Wildlife and Bird Viewing

Cross Timbers State Park is a well-loved destination for wildlife lovers and bird viewers on RV holiday. The park has a Wildlife Area which includes riparian timbered areas, cropland, grasslands, and wetland communities. The native plants restoration, prescribed burning, timber management, and farming activities in the park encourage the presence of wildlife. Animals in the park include white-tailed deer, turkey, bobwhite quail, squirrel, waterfowl, rabbits and furbearers.

Marshes in the Wildlife Area are an excellent habitat for migratory birds, and also provide some excellent viewing for non-game species of shore birds. Besides, a rich variety of songbirds in the park appeals to wildlife observers and photographers.

Fishing

Anglers and lovers of fishing on RV camping trips visit Cross Timbers State Park because of the exciting fishing opportunities the park offers. Thanks to the 2,800-acre Toronto reservoir with a maximum depth of about 24 feet, fishing is a popular activity in the park. The park is known for the abundance of excellent white crappie (up to 15 inches), white bass (up to 18 inches), channel catfish (up to 36 inches), largemouth bass (up to 20 inches), and flathead catfish. In addition, black bass, bluegill, and sunfish are also present. The two fish cleaning stations in the park further add to the fishing adventure. Fishing is prohibited on boat ramps, courtesy docks, swimming beaches, and in swimming areas marked with buoys.

Off-Season
Boating

Cross Timbers State Park has three boat ramp facilities allowing campers enjoy boating activities while on RV vacation at the park. The boat ramps are located around the Toronto reservoir, on Walnut Creek and the Verdigris River to provide boat access. RV campers are not allowed to operate boats within 200 feet of any area posted specifically for swimming and delineated by markers. In addition, no-wake speeds are required within 200 feet of a boat ramp, or boat dock.

Lovers of canoeing and kayaking will enjoy paddling on the blue water trail in the park designated as a canoe and kayak trail.

Swimming

Swimming is a popular activity for RV campers at Cross Timbers State Park, as the park has designated swimming beaches and swimming areas. So, drive to the park with your swimming gear in your RV. Liquor and beer are prohibited on swimming beaches or in waters designated by buoys or other markers as swimming areas. For other beverages, only shatterproof containers are allowed. Also, pets are not allowed on swimming beaches or swimming areas that are delineated by buoys or other markers.

Hunting

The 4700-acre Toronto Wildlife Area consist of land and water areas which are open to RV campers at the park and the public for hunting variety of game. The abundance of wildlife in the area make hunting a pleasant and adventurous activity for vacationers. Firearms may only be discharged in areas specifically designated for hunting or target practice.
