Quartz Lake State Recreation Area

Featuring two lakes, beautiful wildlife, breathtaking views and wonderful recreational activities, Quartz Lake State Recreation Area is a great place to enjoy RV holidays. Located 10 miles north of Delta Junction, Alaska, this state park is a well-loved destination by RV campers and vacationers due to the various recreational opportunities that it offers. Some of the activities to enjoy at the park include fishing, hiking, boating, wildlife viewing, picnicking, swimming, playing volleyball, water skiing, ice fishing, snowmachining, dog mushing, and skijoring. Regardless of the time of year you visit Quartz Lake State Recreation Area, the park has something wonderful for you.

This 600-acre park which attracts large crowds features amenities and facilities such as two boat launches, a handicap accessible fishing dock, picnic sites, a picnic shelter, a swimming area, a beach volleyball court, water, toilets, and parking lots. The park borders the Quartz Lake and Lost Lake.

At Quartz Lake there are 16 campsites in the loop and 87 parking and camping sites in the parking lot development. Lost Lake is a favorite spot for those who want to avoid the crowds and enjoy the area's scenery and wildlife. At Lost Lake there are 12 campsites, a handicap accessible fishing dock, a picnic area, water and toilets.

There are two public use cabins in the Quartz Lake State Recreation Area. Quartz Lake Cabin is located on the upper edge of the parking lot development at Quartz Lake. Glatfelder Cabin is located a half mile from the parking lot development along the southwest shore of Quartz Lake and is accessible by boating or hiking in summer, and by snow-machining, skiing, snowshoeing, and skijoring in winter.


Transportation

Driving

Located 10 miles north of Delta Junction, Alaska, Quartz Lake State Recreation is accessible via a three-mile road at mile 277.8 of the Richardson Highway, making it easily accessible for RVs, trailers, and cars. Within the park, there are paved local roads that link various areas, sites of interests and the campgrounds. There are no driving restrictions within the park.

Parking

Quartz Lake State Recreation Area features a parking lot development with 87 parking sites for RVs, trailers, and cars. Consequently, there are various parking options for rigs at Quartz Lake State Recreation Area. Overnight parking facilities are available for RV campers at the park.

Quartz Lake Campground

Quartz Lake Campground in Quartz Lake State Recreation Area features 16 pet-friendly campsites available for RVs and tents. There are no RV hookups at the campsites in the campground. RV length limit at the campground is 37 feet. Vault toilets, a fee station, dumpster, and Information Center are available at and around the campground. The campsites are shaded and accessible via local paved roads.

Lost Lake Campground

Lost Lake Campground in Quartz Lake State Recreation Area features 12 pet-friendly campsites available for RVs and tents. There are no RV hookups at the campsites in the campground. RV length limit at the campground is 37 feet. A handicap accessible fishing dock, a picnic area, water and toilets are available at and around the campground. The campground is a favorite spot for those who want to avoid the crowds and enjoy the area's scenery and wildlife.

In-Season
Fishing

The most popular activity at Quartz Lake State Recreation Area for RV campers is fishing as more than 34,000 fish are harvested in Quartz Lake annually. This park has some of the best road accessible fishing in the region. Fish species in Quartz Lake include fingerling rainbow trout and coho salmon. These fish species are stocked in Quartz Lake by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game annually. Quartz Lake is also stocked biennially with subcatchable-size Arctic char and catchable-size Chinook salmon. Effective lures in Quartz Lake State Recreation Area include spinners, woolly worms, damsels, shrimp, and eggs.

Lost Lake in the park is also a good fishing area for campers as the lake consists of abundant broodstock and catchable size rainbow trout.

Hiking

Quartz Lake State Recreation Area features five hiking trails that offer extraordinary views of the Tanana River Valley, Alaska Range, Shaw Creek Flats, Quartz and Lost Lakes, and Moose Pond, all for the enjoyment of RV campers. These trails include the 1.8-mile Quartz Lake Loop Trail, Lost Lake Trail, three-mile Bluff Point Trail, Walk About Trail, and Bert Mountain Trail. The Bert Mountain Trail is a rugged 1.7-mile trail which climbs the mountain. This trail ends near the top of Bert Mountain at a helicopter pad constructed by forest firefighters and is used for fire suppression.

Boating

Quartz Lake State Recreation Area offers wonderful boating experiences for RV campers on vacation at the park. Whether you brought your boat to the camp or not, you’re covered. RV campers without boats can take advantage of the boat rental stand in the park and enjoy the experience on the 1500-acre Quartz Lake with a maximum depth of 40 feet. The park features two boat launching areas.

Off-Season
Wildlife Viewing

Lost Lake in the park offers amazing wildlife viewing opportunities. Moose are commonly found by campers that visit the Lost Lake as they often feed on aquatic plants. Nesting swans are also available in this area. Other wildlife in the park include beavers, squirrels, ruffed grouse, ducks, fox, coyotes, wolves, lynx, lesser weasels, martin, and bears.

RV campers and visitors are enjoined to respect the wildlife in the park and be cautious when they encounter any wildlife, especially moose and bears.

Swimming

There is a designated swimming area on Quartz Lake for RV campers and visitors who love to swim to enjoy doing so in the lake which has an average depth of 15 feet. As a result, campers visit the park with their swimming gear and enjoy the warmth and tranquility of the lake.

Birding

Quartz Lake State Recreation Area is a great place to enjoy the beautiful sight of various bird species, whether along the various trails in the park or at the lakes in the park. Some of the birds that campers and visitors at Quartz Lake State Recreation Area see include eagles, owls, hawks, ravens, gulls, chickadees, sparrows, warblers, thrushes, ducks, and geese.
